As you know, the 157th running of the Antigonish Highland Games had to be suspended for a second year due to the Coronavirus Pandemic. Last year we presented The Antigonish Highland Virtual Games. That event was captured in a two-part video called “Our Community, Our Culture, Our Story”. The video can be still be viewed at www.antigonishhighlandgames.ca It was a great success!
This year, we have decided to celebrate July 4th – July 11th, which would have been Highland Games week. The Antigonish Highland Society is pleased to present “Highland Heritage Week”. Due to the gathering limits of today and the unknown for July, we at the Antigonish Highland Society have prepared a week-long schedule of events aimed at the people of Antigonish town and county. We are going to proceed with “what we can do”.
We have asked all merchants in Antigonish town and county to decorate their windows with all things Highland Heritage to be part of a Walking tour. We have a collection of artists who will be working on eight windows on Main Street so watch for that.
Throughout the week we will have posters and signs showing moments from the early days of the Games and more recent past along with events where we can have spectators. Watch for those. Various closed-circuit TV’s around town will be displaying video loops from the virtual show and the entire Virtual Games will be playing with sound on Main Street as well.
The opening Mass will be at St. Ninian Place at 10:30 am on July 4th. It will be first come, first served for seating as they must adhere to social gathering limits. It will also air on XFM Radio that morning at 8:30 am. Throughout the week, we will be filming performances in the town and county. You may get a glimpse of a show or a snippet of song and undoubtedly you will hear the pipes.
The Board Members are planning a trip to the Culloden Memorial, and a Keppoch Hike.
98.9 Xfm will be airing last year’s performances from the Virtual show as our Concert Under the stars. That will be on Wednesday, July 7th at 6 pm. Listen to Xfm – Nothing but Hits for the details.
We are happy to be presenting “Save our Keppoch School” as a drive in on Thursday evening at 9 pm
